Best Time to Book a Hotel for the Lowest Price

Hotel pricing works differently from flight pricing, and the “book early” advice that applies to flights doesn’t always apply the same way to hotels.

For most trips, 1-3 months out is the sweet spot

Hotels release most of their inventory well in advance, and rates generally rise as a date fills up, then sometimes drop again in the final days if occupancy is still low. Booking one to three months ahead usually captures good rates while leaving flexibility, without waiting so long that popular properties sell out.

Last-minute deals exist, but they’re a gamble

Hotels sometimes discount unsold rooms in the final 24-48 hours to avoid an empty night. This works in destinations with lots of hotel supply (big cities, resort areas with many properties), but it’s unreliable for popular dates, holidays, or smaller markets with fewer options.

Peak season shifts the whole calendar

During a destination’s peak season (holidays, festivals, summer in beach destinations, cherry blossom season in Japan), booking early matters much more, since rooms genuinely sell out rather than just becoming more expensive. Outside peak season, waiting for a better rate carries much less risk.

Set a price alert if your dates are flexible

If you’re not in a rush to lock in a room, tracking a specific hotel’s price over a few weeks shows you its actual pricing pattern rather than guessing. Booking with a free-cancellation rate lets you rebook if the price drops later, combining early booking security with late-booking savings.
